Abstract
A system and method for implanting a bone screw in bone which includes the use of a bone cutting tool with expanding bone cutting blades that create a bore in the bone of a desired shape and size. Then a bone screw is introduced into the bore and bone cement is positioned between the bone screw and the bore to fix the position of the bone screw relative to the bone.
Claims33
A method for creating a bore in a vertebra comprising the steps of:
- inserting a bone cutting tool with a longitudinal axis and at least one cutting blade into a vertebra;
- turning the bone cutting tool in order to cut bone in the vertebra and expand a bore within which the cutting tool is positioned;
- expanding the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis;
- turning the bone cutting tool with the expanded cutting blade to cut additional bone in the vertebra and further expand the bore in vertebra;
- and
- as necessary, continuing to expand the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis and turning the cutting tool in the bore in the vertebra until the bore is the desired size.
A method for creating a bore in a vertebra comprising the steps of:
- inserting a bone cutting tool with a longitudinal axis and a first cutting blade and a second cutting blade into a vertebra;
- turning the bone cutting tool in order to cut bone in the vertebra and expand a bore within which the cutting tool is positioned;
- expanding the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis;
- wherein the first and second blade are made of a superelastic material and said expanding step includes flexibly expanding said first and second blades;
- turning the bone cutting tool with the expanded cutting blades to cut additional bone in the vertebra and further expand the bore in vertebra;
- as necessary, continuing to expand the cutting blades away from the longitudinal axis and turning the cutting tool in the bore in the vertebra until the bore is the desired size;
- wherein the bone cutting tool includes a rod positioned along the longitudinal axis and tube extending over the rod;
- wherein said tube at a distal end includes the first cutting blade and second cutting blade;
- and
- wherein said expanding step includes moving said rod relative to said tube in order to expand the first cutting blade and the second cutting blade relative to said rod.
The method of 14 wherein said first cutting blade and said second cutting blade include weakened sections such said expanding step includes expanding said cutting blades such that said cutting blades cut a cylindrical bore in the vertebra.
A method for creating a bore in a vertebra comprising the steps of:
- inserting a bone cutting tool with a longitudinal axis and a first cutting blade and a second cutting blade into a vertebra;
- turning the bone cutting tool in order to cut bone in the vertebra and expand a bore within which the cutting tool is positioned;
- expanding the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis;
- turning the bone cutting tool with the expanded cutting blades to cut additional bone in the vertebra and further expand the bore in vertebra;
- as necessary, continuing to expand the cutting blades away from the longitudinal axis and turning the cutting tool in the bore in the vertebra until the bore is the desired size;
- wherein the bone cutting tool includes a rod positioned along the longitudinal axis and tube extending over the rod;
- wherein said tube at a distal end includes the first cutting blade and second cutting blade;
- and
- wherein said expanding step includes moving said rod relative to said tube in order to expand the first cutting blade and the second cutting blade relative to said rod;
- wherein said bone cutting tool includes a handle with a first portion and a second portion;
- and
- wherein said expanding step includes moving said first portion relative to said second portion such that said cutting blades move relative to said rod.
A method for creating a bore in tissue of a body of a patient comprising the steps of:
- inserting a tissue cutting tool with a longitudinal axis and at least one cutting blade into tissue of the body;
- turning the tissue cutting tool in order to cut tissue in the body and expand a bore within which the cutting tool is positioned;
- expanding the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis;
- turning the tissue cutting tool with the expanded cutting blade to cut additional tissue in the body and further expand the bore in body;
- and
- as necessary, continuing to expand the cutting blade away from the longitudinal axis and turning the cutting tool in the bore in the body until the bore is the desired size.
