The invention is a method of producing an essentially electrically neutral polymer dispersion, comprising a polymerizing one or more monomers in the presence of a nonionic surfactant, wherein the polymerization preferably occurs in the absence of ionic surfactants. The invention also includes methods of producing positively or negatively charged polymer dispersions comprising producing the essentially nonionic polymer dispersion and further adding a cationically-charged or anionically-charged surfactant or electrolyte. The invention further includes dispersions produced by the methods of the invention and polymer films and powders produced from these dispersions.

A method of producing an essentially electrically neutral polymer dispersion, comprising polymerizing one or more nonionic monomers in the presence of at least one nonionic surfactant comprising an alkylene oxide adduct of an alkyl alcohol, wherein the number of alkylene oxide groups is less than or equal to 14, wherein said polymerizing step occurs in the absence of ionic monomers.
A method of producing an essentially electrically neutral polymer dispersion, comprising polymerizing one or more nonionic monomers in the presence of a seed latex and at least one nonionic surfactant, wherein the polymerizing step occurs in the absence of ionic monomers and surfactants.
A method of producing an essentially electrically neutral polymer dispersion, comprising polymerizing styrene and one or more additional nonionic monomers in the presence of at least one nonionic surfactant, wherein the polymerizing step occurs in the absence of ionic monomers and surfactants.

An aqueous polymer dispersion comprising polymer particles, water, and a nonionic surfactant comprising an alkylene oxide adduct of an alkyl alcohol, wherein the number of alkylene oxide groups is less than or equal to 14, wherein said polymer particles are derived from one or more nonionic monomers and dispersed in the water and said nonionic surfactant is entrained in said polymer particles, said polymer dispersion being essentially free of ionic surfactants.
