Abstract
A technique for automatically establishing device IDs for devices in a daisy chain cascade arrangement. For each device, a write ID operation is initiated at the device to cause the device to enter a generate/write ID mode. While in this mode, a first value is input to the device. The device generates a second value from the first value. The device outputs the generated second value from the device to a next device in the daisy chain cascade which uses the second value as a first value for the next device. The device then establishes its ID from the first value. The process is repeated for all devices in the daisy chain cascade arrangement.

A system comprising a plurality of serially coupled devices including at least first and second devices, each of the first and second devices having a plurality of input connections and a plurality of output connections,
- the first device being configured to
- receive an input ID value represented by a plurality of bits at the respective ones of the plurality of input connections of the first device;
- produce an ID value in response to the received input ID value, the produced ID value being represented by a plurality of bits and being outputted through the respective ones of the plurality of output connections of the first device;
- and
- store the received input ID value or the produced ID value as an assigned ID for the first device in response to a first ID store signal,
- the second device being configured to
- receive the outputted ID value from the first device at the respected ones of the polarity of input connections of the second device.
A method for establishing a device identifier (ID) for a device configured in a plurality of serially coupled devices including at least first and second devices, each of the first and second devices having a plurality of input connections and a plurality of output connections, the method comprising:
- at the first device
- receiving an input ID value represented by a plurality of bits at the respective ones of the plurality of input connections of the first device;
- producing an ID value in response to the received input ID value, the produced ID value being represented by a plurality of bits and being outputted through the respective ones of the plurality of output connections of the first device;
- and
- storing the received input ID value or the produced ID value as an assigned ID for the first device in response to a first ID store signal, at the second device
- receiving the outputted ID value from the first device at the respected ones of the polarity of input connections of the second device.
