Abstract
A gastric band assembly has one or more bladders incorporated therein so that the distensibility of the gastric band assembly is increased. The distensibility relates to the relative strength with which the gastric band assembly with a bladder resists the application of additional band contact pressure. Distensibility is quantified by measuring the change in band contact dimension (e.g., diameter or area) versus the change in band contact pressure.

A method of using a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a gastric band and a balloon portion, the balloon portion being in fluid communication with a bladder;
- encircling stomach tissue with the balloon portion of the gastric band to form a stoma area;
- and
- minimizing changes in stoma area in response to changes in stomach tissue physiology as compared to a gastric band assembly without a bladder.
A method for minimizing the rate of change of intra-band pressure in a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a band and a balloon;
- encircling stomach tissue with the band to form a stoma having a stoma diameter;
- incorporating one or more bladders in the gastric band assembly so that the one or more bladders are in fluid communication with the balloon;
- setting an intra-band pressure by adding fluid to the balloon and bladders;
- maintaining the stoma diameter substantially constant by adding fluid to the balloon and bladders each time the intra-band pressure drops below a set intra-band pressure range in response to a decrease in size of the encircled stomach tissue.
A method of using a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a gastric band and a balloon portion, the balloon portion being in fluid communication with a bladder;
- encircling stomach tissue with the balloon portion of the gastric band to form a stoma having a stoma diameter;
- and
- minimizing changes in stoma diameter in response to changes in stomach tissue physiology as compared to a gastric band assembly without a bladder.
A method of using a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a gastric band and a balloon portion, the balloon portion being in fluid communication with a bladder;
- encircling stomach tissue with the balloon portion of the gastric band to form a stoma area;
- and
- minimizing changes in an intra-band pressure and minimizing changes in stoma area in response to changes in the encircled stomach tissue physiology as compared to a gastric band assembly without a bladder.
A method for minimizing the rate of change of intra-band pressure in a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a band and a balloon;
- encircling stomach tissue with the band to form a stoma area;
- incorporating one or more bladders in the gastric band assembly so that the one or more bladders are in fluid communication with the balloon;
- setting an intra-band pressure by adding fluid to the balloon and one or more bladders;
- maintaining the stoma area substantially constant in response to a thinning of the encircled stomach tissue.
A method for treating a patient having a gastric band, comprising:
- providing a gastric band assembly having a band, a balloon and a fluid injection port;
- connecting a flow restrictor and one or more bladders to the balloon and to the fluid injection port;
- encircling stomach tissue with the band so that the balloon is in contact with the tissue and forms a stoma area;
- injecting a fluid into the fluid injection port to increase the level of fluid in the balloon and the one or more bladders in response to changes in the stomach tissue physiology;
- and
- maintaining the stoma area substantially constant in response to further changes in stomach tissue physiology.
A method for treating a patient having a gastric band assembly, comprising
- providing a gastric band assembly having a band and a balloon, the gastric band assembly further having a flow restrictor in fluid communication with the balloon, a bladder assembly in fluid communication with the flow restrictor, and an injection port in fluid communication with the bladder assembly;
- encircling stomach tissue with the band to form a stoma diameter;
- and
- reducing the number of times fluid is injected into the gastric band assembly in response to changes in the stomach tissue physiology in order to maintain a substantially constant stoma diameter.
A method of using a gastric band, comprising:
- encircling stomach tissue with a gastric band assembly to form a stoma diameter;
- incorporating one or more bladders into the gastric band assembly;
- adjusting the fluid level in the gastric band assembly in response to changes in stomach tissue physiology in order to minimize changes in the stoma diameter;
- and
- reducing the number of fluid refill adjustments by at least half relative to the gastric band assembly without a bladder.
