Device and method for mixing and dispensing a bone cement mixture

A closed bone cement mixing and dispensing system, comprising:

• a double-barrelled syringe device having:
• a first barrel with a first plunger, said first plunger having a shaft that is at least partially threaded, said first plunger actuatable to move along said first barrel;
• a second barrel with a second plunger actuatable to move along said second barrel;
• a locking mechanism including a cam and having first and second relative positions, wherein in said first relative position said cam engages said shaft of said first plunger to allow twist-actuation of said first plunger, and in said second position said cam does not engage said shaft of said first plunger to allow push actuation of said first plunger.

A closed bone cement mixing and dispensing system, comprising:

• a double-barrelled syringe device for delivering bone cement having a first barrel, a second barrel, and a valve,
• wherein said first barrel initially contains a first bone cement component and said second barrel initially contains a second bone cement component, and
• wherein said valve allows for the first and second barrels to be in fluid communication to allow mixing, and
• wherein said system further comprises an outlet connected to said valve for dispensing bone cement formed in one or both of said barrels by mixing the bone cement components.

A method for mixing a bone cement mixture and dispensing the bone cement mixture into a damaged bone of a patient, the method comprising:

• mixing a first bone cement component, said first bone cement component being in a first barrel of a double-barrelled syringe, with a second bone cement component, said second bone cement component being in a second barrel of said double-barrelled syringe, said mixing including:
• positioning a valve connected to the first and second barrels in a first position, said first position providing an open path between the first and second barrels;
• and
• actuating the first plunger to advance at least some of the first bone cement component via the path into the second barrel so that the first bone cement component contacts at least some of the second bone cement component, and
• actuating the second plunger to advance at least some of both of the first and second bone cement components via the path to said first barrel,
• one or both of said actuating steps being performed one or more additional times if necessary to adequately mix the components to form the bone cement mixture within at least one of the barrels.
