Antenna selection diversity scheme for zigbee or other wireless devices and related apparatus and method

An apparatus comprising:

• multiple antennas;
• a wireless radio configured to transmit data to and receive data from one or more neighboring nodes using the antennas;
• and
• a controller configured to:
• identify transmit and receive link costs respectively associated with transmitting the data to and receiving the data from the one or more neighboring nodes;
• and
• select at least one of the antennas to be used to further communicate with the one or more neighboring nodes;
• wherein the controller is configured to select the at least one antenna using the transmit and receive link costs;
• and
• wherein the controller is configured to identify at least some of the transmit and receive link costs using link status messages from the one or more neighboring nodes.

A computer readable medium embodying a computer program, the computer program comprising computer readable program code for:

• identifying, at a wireless device, transmit and receive link costs respectively associated with transmitting data to and receiving data from one or more neighboring nodes of the wireless device;
• and
• selecting at least one of multiple antennas to be used to further communicate with the one or more neighboring nodes;
• wherein the computer readable program code for selecting the at least one antenna comprises computer readable program code for selecting the at least one antenna using the transmit and receive link costs;
• and
• wherein the computer readable program code for identifying the transmit and receive link costs comprises computer readable program code for identifying at least some of the transmit and receive link costs using link status messages from the one or more neighboring nodes.
