Methods, Apparatus and Computer Program Products for Associating Local Telephone Numbers with Emergency Phone Calls in a Packet Switched Telephone Systems

A packet switched telephone system comprising:

• a voice over internet protocol server associated with a voice over internet protocol service provider configured to:
• receive a request, from a subscriber, for a packet switched telephone number that is not local to a local geographic rate center of the subscriber;
• and
• assign the subscriber a local telephone number that is local to the subscriber responsive to the request for the packet switched telephone number that is not local, such that the local telephone number can be substituted for the packet switched telephone number that is not local by the voice over internet protocol server that is configured to route a phone call that is directed to a public safety access point so that the phone call that is directed to the public safety access point is properly routed to a local public safety system.

A computer program product for registering subscribers with a voice over internet protocol service, the computer program product comprising:

• a non-transitory, computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable storage medium comprising:
• computer readable program code configured to receive a request, from a subscriber, for a packet switched telephone number that is not local to a local geographic rate center of the subscriber;
• and
• computer readable program code configured to assign the subscriber a local telephone number that is local to the subscriber responsive to the request for the packet switched telephone number that is not local, such that the local telephone number can be substituted for the packet switched telephone number that is not local by a voice over internet protocol server that is configured to route a phone call that is directed to a public safety access point so that the phone call that is directed to the public safety access point is properly routed to a local public safety system.
