System and Method for Determining Establishment Causes for Emergency Sessions

A user equipment, UE, comprising:

• a processor configured to generate a non-access stratum, NAS, ATTACH REQUEST message at the UE, the NAS ATTACH REQUEST message having an attach type associated with establishing an emergency call;
• the processor being further configured to determine a radio resource control, RRC, establishment cause based upon the attach type in the NAS ATTACH REQUEST message, wherein the RRC establishment cause indicates a NAS layer is requesting the establishment of an RRC connection for the emergency call;
• and
• the processor being further configured to transmit an RRC CONNECTION REQUEST message to a radio access network to establish the RRC connection, the RRC CONNECTION REQUEST message including the RRC establishment cause.

A computer readable medium, encoded with instructions that, when executed by a processor of a user equipment, UE, cause the UE perform a method comprising:

• generating a non-access stratum, NAS, ATTACH REQUEST message at the UE, the NAS ATTACH REQUEST message having an attach type associated with establishing an emergency call;
• determining a radio resource control, RRC, establishment cause based upon the attach type in the NAS ATTACH REQUEST message, wherein the RRC establishment cause indicates a NAS layer is requesting the establishment of an RRC connection for the emergency call;
• and
• transmitting an RRC CONNECTION REQUEST message to a radio access network to establish the RRC connection, the RRC CONNECTION REQUEST message including the RRC establishment cause.
