Abstract
A non-pressurized or low pressure, gravity flow system and method for filtering, purifying or otherwise removing contaminants from water to create potable water is disclosed. The filters of the disclosure may be used in non-pressurized, low pressure, gravity flow, pour through or manually pressurized devices and may comprise a membrane having a metallic material, such as a nanoalumina fiber material, grafted onto microglass structural fibers.
Claims34
A gravity powered liquid treatment system comprising:
- a first container for receiving contaminated liquid therein;
- a filter for removing contaminants from the contaminated liquid;
- a second container for receiving liquid that has passed through the filter;
- wherein the system is a non-pressurized, gravity fed system, such that gravitational forces are exerted on the liquid located in said first container to thereby exert a force causing the liquid to flow through the filter and into said second container;
- wherein the first container is subject to atmospheric pressure and atmospheric conditions;
- wherein the filter comprises a filter media comprising a plurality of nanofibers made of a metallic material that are grafted to a plurality of microglass fibers, wherein the plurality of nanofibers are electropositively charged;
- wherein the filter media further comprises a plurality of pores, wherein the filter media comprises a mean pore size that is within a range of about 1 micron to about 2 microns, such that microbiological and other contaminants containing an overall electronegative charge are permitted to enter through the plurality of pores of the filter media and are electrically attracted by the electropositive charge of the nanofibers thereby substantially removing the electronegatively charged contaminants from the liquid passing through the filter media.
A gravity powered liquid purification system comprising:
- a first container for receiving contaminated liquid therein, wherein the first container comprises an inlet and an outlet, wherein the outlet is separate and distinct from the inlet;
- a filter for removing contaminants from the contaminated liquid comprising a filter media in mechanical communication with the first container, wherein the filter media comprises a plurality of nanofibers made of a metallic material that are grafted to a plurality of microglass fibers, wherein the plurality of nanofibers are electropositively charged;
- a first mechanical attachment structure that is in mechanical communication with the filter media;
- a second mechanical attachment structure that is in mechanical communication with the outlet of the container;
- and
- a second container for receiving liquid from the filter media therein;
- wherein the first container is located at a position with respect to the second container that is higher than said second container, such that gravitational forces are exerted on the liquid located in said first container to thereby exert a force causing the liquid to flow through the filter media and into said second container;
- wherein the filter media comprises a plurality of pores, wherein the filter media comprises a mean pore size that is within a range of about 1 micron to about 2 microns, such that microbiological and other contaminants containing an overall electronegative charge are permitted to enter through the plurality of pores of the filter media and are electrically attracted by the electropositive charge of the nanofibers thereby substantially removing the electronegatively charged contaminants from the liquid passing through the filter media, wherein the removal of the electronegatively charged contaminants is characterized by the absence of chemicals and electricity.
A system for filtering contaminants from a liquid solution comprising:
- a filter comprising:
- a filter media comprising an electropositive charge on nanofibers made of a metallic material, wherein the nanofibers comprise a diameter between a range of about 1 nanometer and about 5 nanometers;
- a filter housing comprising the filter media, wherein the filter media is configured and arranged as part of the filter to create a large surface area sufficient for removing contaminants from the liquid solution;
- a container for containing contaminated liquid comprising electronegatively charged contaminants, wherein the contaminated liquid flows from the first container into the filter at a pressure that is less than about one pound per square inch using gravitational forces, such that the electronegatively charged contaminants within the contaminated liquid flows through the electropositively charged filter media, thereby creating an electromagnetic attraction to remove the contaminants from the liquid, wherein the removal of the contaminants is characterized by the absence of chemicals and electricity.
A method for filtering contaminants from a liquid solution comprising:
- adding an amount of a contaminated liquid comprising electronegatively charged contaminants into a container;
- exposing the contaminated liquid and electronegatively charged contaminants to a filter media under a pressure that is less than about one pound per square inch, wherein the filter media comprises an electropositive charge on nanofibers made of a metallic material, wherein the nanofibers comprise a diameter between a range of about 1 nanometer and about 5 nanometers;
- capturing the electronegatively charged contaminants in the contaminated liquid within the electropositively charged filter media through an electromagnetic attraction;
- wherein the method is characterized by the absence of using chemicals and electricity.
