Abstract
A method of operating a progressive die wherein the progressive die acts on a work piece having an elongated body with a blank at one end. The work piece is supported by a bandolier which is also formed in the progressive die. The progressive die acts on each blank.
Claims26
A work piece structured to be carried by a bandolier said bandolier having two lateral sides, said bandolier structured to move along a progressive die, said progressive die having a plurality of work stations disposed on a work side of said bandolier, said work piece comprising:
- a body having a first end and a medial portion;
- said first end being a blank that is structured to be acted upon by said work stations;
- and
- said medial portion being a stem that is structured to support said first end blank at a location offset and spaced from said bandolier work side and positioned adjacent said work stations.
A bandoliered work piece structured to move along a progressive die, said progressive die having a plurality of work stations disposed on a work side of said bandolier, said bandoliered work piece comprising:
- a bandolier having a base supporting a plurality of retaining members spaced along said base and having two lateral sides, one said lateral side being a bandolier work side located adjacent said work stations;
- each said retaining members structured to releasably support a work piece;
- each said work piece comprising:
- a body having a first end and a medial portion;
- said first end being a blank that is structured to be acted upon by said work stations;
- and
- said medial portion being a stem that is structured to support said first end blank at a location offset and spaced from said bandolier work side and positioned adjacent said work stations.
A press structured to utilize work pieces having a blank that is offset and spaced from a bandolier, said press comprising:
- a progressive die having a plurality of work stations, said progressive die structured to receive a metal strip material;
- said progressive die further structured to receive a metal wire;
- said progressive die further structured to form said strip material into a bandolier comprising a base supporting a plurality of retaining members spaced along said base and having two lateral sides, one said lateral side being a bandolier work side located adjacent said work stations;
- said bandolier structured to move over a substantially linear path through said progressive die, said plurality of work stations disposed on one side of said bandolier path;
- said progressive die further structured to form said wire material into a work piece;
- said work piece comprising:
- a body having a first end and a medial portion;
- said first end being a blank that is structured to be acted upon by said work stations;
- and
- said medial portion being a stem that is structured to support said first end blank at a location offset and spaced from said bandolier work side and positioned adjacent said work stations.
A method of making bullets utilizing a progressive die having a plurality of work stations disposed to one side of the path of a bandolier structured to carry a plurality of work pieces, said method comprising the steps of:
- a) forming a bandolier from strip material, said bandolier having a plurality of retaining members;
- b) inserting a work piece into each retaining member, said work piece having a body having a first end and a medial portion, said first end being a blank that is structured to be acted upon by said work stations, said medial portion being a stem that is structured to support said blank at a location offset and spaced from said bandolier work side and positioned adjacent said work stations;
- c) forming said blanks into bullets;
- and
- d) separating said bullets from said stem.
A dual sided work piece structured to be carried by a bandolier along a progressive die, said progressive die having a plurality of work stations disposed on opposite sides of said bandolier, said work piece comprising:
- a body having a first end, a medial portion, and a second end;
- each of said first end and second end being a blank that is structured to be acted upon by said work stations;
- said medial portion being a stem that is structured to support said blanks;
- and
- wherein said body includes an orienting structure.
