Abstract
The present invention relates to the field of transgenic and non-transgenic plants with novel phenotypes. Provided are SlPP2C1 proteins and nucleic acid sequences encoding these, which are useful in conferring novel phenotypes to plants, especially drought tolerance.
Claims16
A non-transgenic plant, fruit, seed or part of a plant comprising a SlPP2C1 allele in its genome, wherein the allele encodes a SlPP2C1 protein comprising an amino acid sequence that is at least 60% identical to SEQ ID NO:
- 2, and wherein the allele comprises one or more mutations in its nucleotide sequence resulting in a plant having enhanced drought tolerance when compared to the plant comprising a wild type SlPP2C1 allele in its genome.
A method of generating transgenic or non-transgenic plants with enhanced drought tolerance comprising introducing a nucleic acid encoding a SlPP2C1 into a plant, wherein the SlPP2C1 protein comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 60% identical to SEQ ID NO:
- 2.
A transgenic plant, seed, fruit or part of a plant comprising chimeric gene that is integrated into its genome, wherein said chimeric gene comprises a promoter active in plant cells operably linked to a nucleic acid sequence comprising a sense and/or antisense sequence of a SlPP2C1 gene, which upon transcription silences endogenous SlPP2C1 gene expression, and wherein said plant comprises enhanced drought tolerance when compared to a plant lacking said chimeric gene.
A chimeric gene comprising a tissue specific-, inducible- or developmentally regulated promoter active in plant cells, operably linked to a nucleic acid sequence comprising a sense and/or antisense fragment of a SlPP2C1 gene which upon transcription silences endogenous SlPP2C1 gene, wherein said endogenous SlPP2C1 gene comprises a nucleic acid sequence that is at least 60% identical to SEQ ID NO:
- 1.
A non-transgenic, drought tolerant tomato plant, seeds, progeny, or tomato fruits thereof, said plant being obtainable by TILLING, comprising a mutant SlPP2C1 allele in its genome, wherein said mutant allele encodes a SlPP2C1 protein having reduced-function or loss-of-function when compared to the wild type SlPP2C1 protein.
