Abstract
The present invention relates generally to intrinsic injection molding gates and a method of overmolding cordage. More specifically, this disclosure relates to a mold configuration wherein the viscous material is first injected into a distributor collar and then into a plurality of intrinsic injection molding gates with are formed between the injection mold and the cordage to be overmolded.
Claims13
An injection mold comprising;
- an injection mold base;
- a cordage retaining slot,
- a cordage gate,
- a distributor collar cavity,
- an intrinsic injection gate section and,
- a overmolding cavity.
The injection mold of claim I, wherein the distributor collar cavity forms an annular ring about the outside surface of a cord prior to overmolding.
A overmold comprising;
- a cord having and outside surface and a terminating end,
- a distributor collar,
- an intrinsic injection gate section and,
- a overmolded section.
A method of overmolding cordage comprising:
- providing a section of cordage having a running length and a terminating end;
- providing a lower mold;
- providing a upper mold;
- each mold having reciprocal halves of a, sprue, injection gate, cordage retention slot, cordage gate, distribution collar, intrinsic injection gate section, and overmold section;
- the intrinsic injection gate section having a plurality of ribs;
- inserting the terminating end of the section of cordage into the overmold section of the lower mold;
- pressing the running length into the intrinsic injection gate section, the distribution collar, the cordage gate and the cordage retention slot of the lower mold;
- closing the upper mold on the lower mold,
- the engagement of the plurality of ribs with the running section of cordage forming a plurality of intrinsic gates,
- injecting viscous material through the sprite, gate, and into the distribution collar,
- filling the distribution collar until pressure evenly forces the viscous material through the plurality of intrinsic gates, the even flow of viscous material centers the terminating end of the section of cordage within the overmold section;
- filling the overmold section, forming a layer of viscous material over the terminating end of the section of cordage;
- allowing viscous material to cure, forming an overmold;
- opening the upper mold from the lower mold and,
- removing the section of cordage with the overmold.
