Abstract
In a paper feeder, a signal switching unit switches a paper present signal output from a paper detector to a paper absent signal indicative of absence of a paper in the second paper cassette if a first paper cassette is pulled out from a specific position.

An image forming apparatus comprising:
- a first paper cassette supported on an image-forming-apparatus main body in a manner that allows the first paper cassette to be pulled out from a specific position;
- and
- an additional paper-feed unit that can be connected to a lower portion of the image-forming-apparatus main body, wherein
- a cassette detector provided on the additional paper-feed unit detects whether the first paper cassette is in the specific position when the additional paper-feed unit is connected to the image-forming-apparatus main body.
