Genetically engineered cells and microorganisms are provided that produce fatty alcohols from the fatty acid biosynthetic pathway, as well as methods of their use.

A genetically engineered microbial cell comprising one or more polynucleotide sequences encoding one or more polypeptides having one or both of (a) acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity (EC 6.4.1.2) and (b) fatty alcohol forming activity, wherein the cultured recombinant microbial cell produces a fatty alcohol when cultured in medium containing a carbon source under conditions effective to overexpress the polynucleotide(s) relative to the corresponding wild type polynucleotide sequence(s).
