Method and system for extended network access notification via a broadband acess gateway

A system supporting mobile user access to media content, the system comprising:

• at least one processor for use in an access device of a user, the at least one processor arranged to coordinate communication of information by selecting from a plurality of wireless communication networks comprising a first wireless communication network having a first coverage area and a second wireless communication network having a second coverage area, the at least one processor operable to, at least:
• wirelessly communicate access device capability information and metadata information for media content stored at the access device, to a gateway device supporting the second wireless communication network;
• notify the user of the access device of one or both of which of the plurality of wireless communication networks have signal conditions acceptable for handoff, and when automatic handoff of wireless communication of the access device is occurring;
• and
• coordinate handoff of access device communication between use of the first wireless communication network and use of the second wireless communication network.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having a plurality of code sections each comprising a plural of instructions executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform a method of supporting mobile user access to media content in an access device of a user to coordinate communication of information by selecting from a plurality of wireless communication networks comprising a first wireless communication network having a first coverage area and a second wireless communication network having a second coverage area, the steps of the method comprising:

• wirelessly communicating access device capability information and metadata information for media content stored at the access device, to a gateway device supporting the second wireless communication network;
• notifying the user of the access device of one or both of which of the plurality of wireless communication networks have signal conditions acceptable for handoff, and when automatic handoff of wireless communication of the access device is occurring;
• and
• coordinating handoff of access device communication between use of the first wireless communication network and use of the second wireless communication network.
