Abstract
The present technology relates to biocidal compositions and methods that contain and utilize at least one biocidal agent and at least one potentiator system wherein the resultant combination has an enhanced biocidal efficacy. The present technology also discloses a rapid screening assay for determining biocidal compositions with enhanced efficacy, e.g., a microbial contact kill time of 5 minutes or less. Further, the present technology provides a method of determining biocidally effective concentrations of biocidal compositions comprising at least one biocidal agent and at least one potentiator system.
Claims20
A quantitative method of determining the percent kill of a biocidal composition for a biocidal target at a specific contact time comprising the steps of:
- adding at least one biocidal composition,
- adding at least one microbial agent,
- incubating the mixture for a sufficient contact time,
- adding a sufficient amount of at least one viability agent to the mixture to measure the amount of viable biocidal target in the mixture,
- quantitatively measuring the amount of viable biocidal target in the mixture;
- and
- comparing the quantitative amount of the viable biocidal target with an untreated control to determine the percent kill of the biocidal composition.
A method of determining one or more biocidal composition's biological effectiveness against one or more biocidal targets comprising the steps of:
- providing at least one biocidal composition comprising at least one biocidal agent and at least one inert compound;
- adding at least the biocidal target to the biocidal composition to form a biocidal mixture;
- incubating the biocidal mixture for a sufficient incubation time;
- adding a sufficient quantity of at least one viability agent;
- quantitatively measuring the amount of viable biocidal target in the biocidal mixture;
- and
- comparing the quantitative measurement of the biocidal mixture with an untreated control to determine the biocidal efficacy of the biocidal composition against the one or more microbial agents.
A method of determining an effective amount of a potentiator system for inclusion in a biocidal composition having a microbial contact kill time of 5 minutes or less for at least one microbe comprising the steps of:
- providing at least one potentiator system having at least one potentiator agent and at least one carrier agent;
- providing at least one biocidal agent;
- combining a first concentration of the potentiator system with the biocidal agent to form a first mixture;
- separately combining a second concentration of the potentiator system with the biocidal agent to form a second mixture;
- quantitatively determining at least one percent kill amount of the first mixture;
- quantitatively determining at least one percent kill amount of the second mixture;
- comparing the percent kill amounts of the first and second mixtures to determine one or more concentrations of the potentiator system to be combined with the biocidal agent to form a biocidal composition effective to provide a microbial contact kill time of about 5 minutes or less for at least one microbial agent.
