Procedures for the stabilization of vulnerable plaque can comprise identification of the vulnerable plaque and the delivery of a stabilization composition to the location of the vulnerable plaque. For example, the stabilization composition can be delivered to an isolated portion of the vessel with the vulnerable plaque and/or alternatively or additionally using a profusion balloon that delivers the stabilization composition at the vessel wall near the vulnerable plaque. Suitable stabilization compositions can comprise a collagen crosslinking agent, an elastin stabilization agent, VEGF or a combination thereof. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can be used to encourage endothelialization of the vessel wall near the vulnerable plaque.
A method for the treatment of vulnerable plaque comprising:
A composition comprising a biocompatible carrier, a collagen crosslinking agent and a VEGF growth factor, wherein composition has a concentration of the collagen crosslinking agent at least about 0.5 w/v %.
A medical device for delivery of a composition at a location in a blood vessel, the device comprising:
A medical device comprising a vascular isolation apparatus and a reservoir of VEGF, wherein the vascular isolation device comprises a sealing element operably connected with a catheter having a lumen with fluid passage between the reservoir and a fluid delivery port, the sealing member being configured for isolating a portion of a blood vessel when the catheter is delivered in a less invasive endovascular procedure, and wherein the fluid delivery port is positioned for delivery of fluid to the isolated portion of the blood vessel.
