Abstract
A solution is provided for modifying the location at which bodily fluids interact with nutrients in a gastrointestinal tract having a conduit with a first end and a second end. The first end is configured to divert bodily fluids from an entrance within a gastrointestinal tract to a location downstream from the entrance. The solution also provides for a means for attaching the second end to the entrance.
Claims22
A method for reducing an effective absorptive length of an intestine, the method comprising:
- securing a diverting structure within the intestine so that the diverting structure diverts bodily fluid entering the intestine from a lumen of a duct located in a wall of the intestine;
- and
- extending a conduit within the intestine, where a first portion of the conduit is fluidly coupled to the diverting structure to receive the bodily fluids, and where a second portion of the conduit delivers the bodily fluids to a location distal to the duct such that the conduit fluidly separates the bodily fluids from the intestines sufficiently to reduce the effective length of the intestine available for absorption of food.
A method for diverting bodily fluids within a portion of an intestine, the method comprising:
- positioning a flow diverting structure within an intestine such that the flow diverting structure diverts bodily fluids from a duct in the intestine;
- and
- placing a conduit within the intestine, where the conduit is fluidly coupled to the structure to receive the fluids and where the conduit delivers the bodily fluids to a location distal to the duct, such that the conduit reduces interaction between the bodily fluid and the intestine to reduce an effective length of the intestine available
