Abstract
Some embodiments of a method and an apparatus to migrate functionalities across systems have been presented. In one embodiment, a system call from an application running on a first system is detected. The first system has a first version of an operating system, but the system call requires a functionality that is not available in the first version of the operating system. The functionality is available in a second version of the operating system running on a second system. Therefore, the system call is reflected from the first system to the second system.
Claims23
A computer-implemented method comprising:
- detecting, by a hypervisor running on a processor, a system call from an application running on a first system having a first version of an operating system, the system call requiring a functionality available in a second version of the operating system, but not in the first version of the operating system;
- and
- the hypervisor reflecting the system call from the first system to a second system, the second system having the second version of the operating system.
An apparatus comprising:
- a processor to execute a kernel module to determine if a system call from an application requires a functionality not available on a first operating system running locally, but available on a second operating system running remotely on a server;
- and
- a network interface to couple to the server via a network, to send the system call to the server.
An apparatus comprising:
- a processor to execute a dummy process creator to create a dummy process to translate parameters in a system call received from a remote computing device, wherein the system call requires a functionality available in a first operating system running on the processor, but not in a second operating system on the remote computing device;
- and
- a network interface to couple to the computing device via a network, to receive the system call.
An apparatus comprising:
- a first virtual machine executable by a processor;
- a second virtual machine executable by the processor;
- and
- a hypervisor, executable by the processor, to manage the first and the second virtual machines, the hypervisor comprising a system call handler to determine requirements of a system call from the first virtual machine and to re-direct the system call to the second virtual machine if the system call requires a functionality not available on a first operating system of the first virtual machine, but available on a second operating system of the second virtual machine.
A computer-readable storage medium embodying instructions that, when executed by a processor, will cause the processor to perform a method comprising:
- detecting a system call from an application running on a first system having a first version of an operating system, the system call requiring a functionality available in a second version of the operating system, but not in the first version of the operating system;
- and
- reflecting the system call from the first system to a second system, the second system having the second version of the operating system.
