Abstract
The present invention discloses methods of using the methylation status of the COX-2 gene promoter region as a biomarker for a gastric cancer patient to determine a prognosis and a treatment regimen, and to monitor the progress of a treatment regimen.
Claims13
A method for determining a prognosis for a cancer patient, comprising:
- obtaining a tumor tissue sample from the patient;
- extracting genomic DNA from the tissue sample;
- and
- determining a methylation status of DNA for a predetermined number of base-pairs around the COX-2 promoter,
- wherein a methylation status of hypermethylation in the COX-2 promoter region indicates a positive prognosis.
2 more elements
A method for determining a course of treatment for a cancer patient, comprising:
- obtaining a tumor tissue sample from the patient;
- analyzing the sample to determine a methylation status in the COX-2 promoter region with a predetermined number of base-pairs around the promoter;
- and
- prescribing a course of treatment for the patient depending on the status of methylation.
1 more element
A method for monitoring the progress of a treatment plan for a cancer patient undergoing the treatment, comprising:
- obtaining a tumor tissue sample at the beginning of the treatment and determining the methylation status in the COX-2 promoter region with a predetermined number of base-pairs around the promoter to establish a baseline;
- obtaining a tumor tissue sample at predetermined intervals and determining for each sample the methylation status in the COX-2 promoter region with a predetermined number of base-pairs around the promoter;
- and
- comparing the methylation status of the samples to determine a progress status for the treatment.
