Abstract
A variable chord morphing helicopter rotor blade is disclosed. The variable chord morphing helicopter rotor blade includes an extensible quasi-static chord section connected to the rotor blade, an adjusted airfoil chord length of the rotor blade corresponding to extension of the quasi-static chord section relative to a baseline airfoil chord length, the adjusted airfoil chord length determined according to helicopter flight conditions.
Claims18
A helicopter rotor comprising:
- a rotor hub;
- a rotor blade connected to the rotor hub, the rotor blade comprising a baseline airfoil chord length between a leading edge and a trailing edge of the rotor blade;
- a quasi-static chord section extensible from the trailing edge of the rotor blade and selectively fixed at an adjusted chord length according to helicopter flight conditions, the adjusted airfoil chord length of the rotor blade corresponding to extension of the quasi-static chord section relative to the baseline airfoil chord length.
A method of forming a helicopter rotor comprising:
- providing a rotor hub;
- providing a rotor blade connected to the rotor hub, the rotor blade comprising a baseline airfoil chord length between a leading edge and a trailing edge of the rotor blade;
- and
- providing a quasi-static chord section extensible from the trailing edge of the rotor blade and selectively fixing the quasi-static chord section at an extended chord length corresponding to helicopter flight conditions.
A method of reducing rotor noise at a given flight condition, the method comprising:
- providing a rotor blade connected to a rotor hub, the rotor blade comprising a baseline airfoil chord length between a leading edge and a trailing edge of the rotor blade;
- and
- providing a quasi-static chord section extensible from the trailing edge of the rotor blade and selectively fixing the quasi-static chord section at an extended chord length, in conjunction with rotor RPM reduction.
