Abstract
A method for encoding or compressing probability distributions is disclosed. A first mapping of probability distribution of samples to the types from the predefined set of types is generated. A second mapping of the types in the predefined set of types to lexicographic indexes from the index space is generated. A probability distribution is quantized as a type from the predefined set of types. The type is then mapped to a lexicographic index from the index space that spans the predefined set of types. A code for the lexicographic index is then transmitted and/or stored as part of a feature descriptor.

A method for encoding a probability distribution, comprising:
- quantizing a probability distribution as a type from a predefined set of types;
- mapping the type to a lexicographic index from an index space that spans the predefined set of types;
- and
- transmitting a code for the lexicographic index as part of a feature descriptor.
An encoding device, comprising:
- a quantizer adapted to quantize a probability distribution as a type from a predefined set of types;
- a mapper adapted to map the type to a lexicographic index from an index space that spans the predefined set of types;
- and
- a communication interface adapted to transmit a code for the lexicographic index as part of a feature descriptor.
An encoding device, comprising:
- means for quantizing a probability distribution as a type from a predefined set of types;
- means for mapping the type to a lexicographic index from an index space that spans the predefined set of types;
- and
- means for transmitting a code for the lexicographic index as part of a feature descriptor.
A machine-readable medium comprising instructions operational for encoding a probability distribution, which when executed by a processor causes the processor to:
- quantize a probability distribution as a type from a predefined set of types;
- map the type to a lexicographic index from an index space that spans the predefined set of types;
- and
- transmit a code for the lexicographic index as part of a feature descriptor.
A method for decoding a probability distribution, comprising:
- receiving a code representative of a lexicographic index within an index space as part of a feature descriptor;
- mapping the lexicographic index to a type from a predefined set of types;
- and
- converting the type to a probability distribution.
A decoding device, comprising
- a receiver for receiving a code representative of a lexicographic index within an index space as part of a feature descriptor;
- a first mapper for mapping the lexicographic index to a type from a predefined set of types;
- and
- a converter for converting the type to a probability distribution.
A decoding device, comprising
- means for receiving a code representative of a lexicographic index within an index space as part of a feature descriptor;
- means for mapping the lexicographic index to a type from a predefined set of types;
- and
- means for converting the type to a probability distribution.
