Flume system for a filter system including at least one filter having a filter bed that is periodically washed with liquid, gas or a combination thereof

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) a first flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said first flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said first flume receives a washing gas and directs said washing gas upwardly through said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs;
• and,
• (c) a second flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said second flume being spaced from said first flume, said second flume being configured such that during washing said second flume receives a washing liquid and directs the washing liquid upwardly through said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs.

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) at least one underdrain lateral operably associated with said filter bed;
• (c) a flume being in fluid communication with said at least one underdrain lateral, said flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said flume receives a washing gas and directs said washing gas upwardly through said at least one lateral into said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs;
• and,
• (d) a conduit extending between said flume and said at least one underdrain lateral, said conduit having means for allowing a washing gas to be directed to said lateral while residual liquid remaining in said flume from a prior service run is simultaneously evacuated through said conduit.

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) a flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said flume receives a washing gas and directs said washing gas upwardly into said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs;
• and,
• (c) said flume having a baffle, said baffle being disposed such that the washing gas and residual liquid that may be present in said flume from a prior service run pass under said baffle to exit said flume.

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) a flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said flume receives a washing gas and directs said washing gas upwardly into said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs;
• and,
• (c) a sub-flume being in fluid communication with said flume and said filter bed, said sub-flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said sub-flume receives a washing gas from said flume and directs said washing gas to said filter bed.

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) a flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said flume directs a washing gas and a washing liquid into said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs, said flume including a washing gas compartment separate from a washing liquid compartment such that no washing gas and washing liquid interface is present in said flume;
• and,
• (c) a conduit extending between said washing gas compartment and said filter bed, said conduit being disposed relative to said washing gas compartment such that a lowermost portion of said conduit is disposed above a lowermost portion of said washing gas compartment.

A filter system having a filter bed for filtering water or wastewater, where the filter bed is periodically washed between service runs by directing washing liquid and washing gas upwardly through the filter bed, said filter system comprising:

• (a) a filter bed;
• (b) a plurality of underdrain laterals disposed below said filter bed;
• (c) a flume being in fluid communication with said filter bed, said flume being configured such that during washing of said filter bed between service runs said flume receives a washing gas and directs said washing gas upwardly through said filter bed to assist in cleaning said filter bed between service runs;
• (d) at least a portion of said plurality of laterals forms at least one wall of said flume;
• and,
• (e) at least one of said plurality of laterals having a length less than a length of at least one other of said plurality of laterals creating a space to receive a washing gas pipe for supplying washing gas to said flume.
