Abstract
An optical fiber sensing cable is disclosed. The optical fiber sensing cable comprises a fiber with a core having an index of refraction n1, and a circumferential surface of the fiber including a nanoporous cladding having an index of refraction index n2. The methods of preparing the fiber sensor cable, including forming the nanoporous cladding and the sensor systems incorporating the optical fiber sensing cable of this invention are also disclosed.
Claims29
An optical fiber sensing cable comprising:
- a sapphire fiber comprising:
- a core having an index of refraction n1;
- and
- a nanoporous sapphire cladding, having an index of refraction n2, present around at least a part of a circumferential surface of the fiber.
(canceled)
A method of fabricating a sapphire optical fiber sensing cable, comprising:
- providing an optical fiber comprising a core having an index of refraction n1;
- forming a nanoporous cladding around at least a part of a circumferential surface of the fiber with an index of refraction n2, wherein n2<n1, wherein the nanoporous cladding is formed by impingement of a high-energy radiation.

(canceled)
A temperature sensor system comprising:
- an optical fiber sensing cable comprising:
- a core comprising sapphire, said core having an index of refraction n1, wherein the core comprises at least one Bragg grating structure;
- and
- a nanoporous sapphire cladding present around the circumferential surface of the fiber;
- an interrogation source for generating an interrogation signal, wherein upon interrogation of the fiber sensing cable by the interrogation signal, the Bragg grating structure generates a response data signal characteristic of a sensed temperature;
- and
- a signal acquisition and analysis system, wherein the response data signal is acquired by the data acquisition and analysis system to estimate the sensed temperature.
