Accommodating or focusable contact lens

A contact lens of single optical design (i.e. single vision, not multifocal) being formed of a rigid gas permeable material and having a standard posterior curvature surface made to fit the predetermined corneal surface of a specific eye with the anterior portion of the said contact lens comprising a central optic zone that is solid (i.e. one dioptric power) but can be either of standard, thicker or thinner thickness relative to the peripheral portion of the lens;

• the mid peripheral to peripheral portion of the anterior of the said lens being modified so as to allow the eyelids (upper and lower) to engage or contact the lens in order to change its shape or position on the eye when attempting to accommodate or focus by having the eyelids apply pressure on the lens (effectively squeezing or lifting it) and thereby providing additional dioptric power to the eye either in the changed shape of the said lens or the tear film layer beneath the lens or by changes in both optic layers and upon release of the said lens by the eyelids (by relaxing the eyelids), the lens should revert back to its original form and dioptric power.

A contact lens that in so being able to provide additional dioptric power to the eye for focusing at near through mechanical changes to the said lens, is called an “accommodating contact lens or focusable contact lens”. This name or designation and concept being exclusive to this type of contact lens (and patent rights) under the definition of accommodation, in which there is a change in dioptric power to the eye when viewing from far to near, and any similar versions that work under this idea, principle and/or general design would fall under this designation.
