Abstract
The present invention discloses a vaccine that provides protection to turkeys from coccidiosis, and methods of making and using the vaccine alone, or in combinations with other protective agents. In addition, the present invention discloses PCR primer sets that are useful in identifying the species of Eimeria in a biological sample.
Claims33
A vaccine composition comprising E. meleagrimitis 2 and E. meleagrimitis 1.
A vaccine composition comprising a first strain of E. meleagrimitis 2 and a second strain of E. meleagrimitis 2;
- wherein the first strain and the second strain have an asynchronous prepatent period.
The method of claim 17 wherein the vaccine is administered in the drinking water of the turkey.
A method of immunizing a turkey against coccidiosis comprising administering to the turkey a vaccine against E. meleagrimitis 2 comprising an immunologically effective amount E. meleagrimitis 2.
A method of identifying an Eimeria isolate as an E. meleagrimitis 2 comprising comparing the nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate with the nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region within SEQ ID NO:
- 44;
- wherein the Eimeria isolate is identified as an E. meleagrimitis 2 when the entire nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate exhibits greater then 87% homology with the entire nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region within SEQ ID NO:
- 44.
A method of identifying an Eimeria isolate as an E. meleagrimitis 2 comprising comparing the nucleic acid sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate with the nucleic acid sequence of the ITS-1 region within a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:
- 31, SEQ ID NO:
- 32, SEQ ID NO:

- wherein the Eimeria isolate is identified as an E. meleagrimitis 2 when the entire nucleic acid sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate exhibits greater then 95% homology with the entire nucleic acid sequence of the ITS-1 region within said nucleotide sequence.
A method of identifying an Eimeria isolate as an E. meleagrimitis 2 comprising comparing the nucleic acid sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate with the entire nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region of SEQ ID NO:
- 44;
- wherein the Eimeria isolate is identified as an E. meleagrimitis 2 when the entire nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region of the genome of the Eimeria isolate exhibits 100% identity with the entire nucleotide sequence of the ITS-1 region within SEQ ID NO:
- 44.
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer pair for amplifying an ITS-1 region of the genome of a species of turkey Eimeria comprising a first and second primer, wherein the nucleotide sequences of the first and second primer respectively are selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:
- 3 and SEQ ID NO:
- 4, SEQ ID NO:
