Abstract
An implant assembly for creating a neural interface with a central nervous system having at least one biocompatible intracortical electrode is presented along with a method of making and implanting device. The mechanical, electrical and biological characteristics of the assembly support its use as a reliable long term implant.

An implant assembly for sensing neural activity of a subject, comprising:
- a hub member;
- a plurality of electrodes each having a proximal end connected to the hub member such that the proximal ends of at least a portion of the plurality of electrodes are at non-parallel angles to each another, and each having a distal end extending from the hub member;
- a connector attached to the hub member;
- and
- a plurality of electrical traces in communication with the connector, and extending through one or more portions of the hub member and at least a portion of the plurality of electrodes, wherein a portion of each electrical trace is exposed on one of the electrodes to form a transducer site that is adapted to convert sensed electro-chemical physical reactions present in the neural tissue of the subject into electrical signals, and wherein the electrical traces are adapted to transmit the electrical signals to the connector.
An implant assembly for sensing neural activity of a subject, comprising:
- a hub member;
- a plurality of electrodes each having a proximal end connected to the hub member, and a distal end extending from the hub member, the plurality of electrodes configured to be individually bendable such that the implant assembly can be shaped to correspond to specific regions of tissue;
- a connector attached to the hub member;
- and
- a plurality of electrical traces in communication with the connector, and extending through one or more portions of the hub member and at least a portion of the plurality of electrodes, wherein a portion of each electrical trace is exposed on one of the electrodes to form a transducer site that is adapted to convert sensed electro-chemical physical reactions present in the neural tissue of the subject into electrical signals, and wherein the electrical traces are adapted to transmit the electrical signals to the connector.
A method of recording neural signals comprising:
- preparing a site on a subject for implantation of an implant assembly;
- providing an implant assembly comprising:
- a hub member;
- a plurality of electrodes each having a proximal end connected to the hub member such that the proximal ends of at least a portion of the plurality of electrodes are at non-parallel angles to each another, and each having a distal end extending from the hub member;
- a connector attached to the hub member;
- and
- a plurality of electrical traces in communication with the connector, and extending through one or more portions of the hub member and at least a portion of the plurality of electrodes, wherein a portion of each electrical trace is exposed on one of the electrodes to form a transducer site that is adapted to convert sensed electro-chemical physical reactions present in the neural tissue of the subject into electrical signals, and wherein the electrical traces are adapted to transmit the electrical signals to the connector;
- implanting the implant assembly at the site such that the electrodes surround a tissue volume of interest;
- and
- connecting the implant assembly to a recording device configured to receive electrical signals from the transducer sites.
