Abstract
A system and method for examining content of a client computer operating system is provided. Layout information of data related to a data container stored within the client computer is retrieved, where the layout information is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the client computer. The layout information is transmitted to a storage system. The storage system reconstructs the layout information of the data container stored within the client computer in a shadow volume implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the storage system.
Claims24
A method, comprising:
- retrieving layout information of data related to a data container stored within a client computer, wherein the layout information is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the client computer;
- transmitting the layout information to a storage system;
- and
- reconstructing, by the storage system using the layout information, the data container stored within the client computer in a shadow volume, wherein the shadow volume is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the storage system.
A system, comprising:
- agent executing on a client computer configured to retrieve layout information of data related to a data container stored within a client computer, wherein the layout information is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the client computer;
- the agent further configured to transmit the layout information to a storage system;
- and
- the storage system configured to reconstruct the data container stored within the client computer in a shadow volume using the layout information, wherein the shadow volume is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the storage system.
A computer readable medium containing executable program instructions executed by a processor, comprising:
- program instructions that retrieve layout information of data related to a data container stored within a client computer, wherein the layout information is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the client computer;
- program instructions that transmit the layout information to a storage system;
- and program instructions that reconstruct, by the storage system using the layout information, the data container stored within the client computer in a shadow volume, wherein the shadow volume is implemented in terms of native operating system semantic of the storage system.
A method for operating a computer data storage system, comprising:
- executing an agent on a client computer, the agent determining a logical block layout of files and directories of a client file system using a semantic of the client file system;
- transmitting, by the agent, the logical block layout of the files and the directories of the client file system to the data storage system;
- reconstructing the logical block layout of the files and the directories of the client file system by the data storage system using a semantic of the data storage system;
- and
- saving data located in the client file system in the logical block layout of the client file system into corresponding blocks with the reconstructed layout of the client file system in the data storage system using the semantic of the data storage system.
