Abstract
A monitor sends an alert to a host computer operatively coupled to the monitor. As a result of receiving the alert, the host computer retrieves display panel data and retrieves monitor control settings from the monitor. The host computer uses the display panel data and monitor control settings to compute a monitor display profile.

A method, comprising:
- a monitor sending an alert to a host computer operatively coupled to the monitor;
- as a result of receiving said alert, the host computer retrieving display panel data;
- as a result of receiving said alert, the host computer retrieving monitor control settings from the monitor;
- and
- the host computer using the display panel data and monitor control settings to compute a monitor display profile.

- a host computer adapted to be coupled to a monitor comprising front end electronics and a display panel;
- wherein the host computer receives monitor control settings from the monitor and retrieves data of the display panel and computes a display profile using said monitor control settings and said data.
A monitor, comprising:
- a user interface that enables a user to adjust at least one setting for the monitor;
- and
- front end electronics coupled to said user interface;
- a display panel coupled to the front end electronics;
- and
- storage accessible to the front end electronics containing monitor control settings and display panel characterization data;
- wherein said front end electronics sends an alert signal to a host computer upon a user changing a monitor control setting.
