Abstract
A system and method for monitoring user traffic. An observance window is established for a time period associated with the CIR burst refresh rate. Incoming bits are measured to determine if the CIR plus CBS rate is exceeded. A determination is made whether there is a threshold crossing during the observance window. A flag state is set indicating a user device is out of conformance in response to determining there is a threshold crossing.
Claims20
A method for monitoring user traffic, the method comprising:
- establishing an observance window for a time period associated with committed information rate (CIR) burst refresh rate;
- measuring incoming bits to determine if the CIR rate plus committed burst size (CBS) rate is exceeded;
- determining whether there is a threshold crossing during the observance window;
- and
- setting a flag state indicating a user device is out of conformance in response to determining there is a threshold crossing.
A method for tracking conformance with a bandwidth profile, the method comprising:
- measuring throughput;
- determining an average for the offered throughput utilizing the throughput;
- determining whether the average exceeds a bandwidth profile in response to a determination that packets are discarded;
- and
- sending an alarm in response to determining the average exceeds the bandwidth profile.
A user network interface (UNI) for monitoring traffic from a user, the UNI comprising:
- a shift register operable to establishing an observance window for a time period associated with a CIR burst refresh rate and measure incoming bits to determine if a CIR rate plus the CIR burst refresh rate is exceeded;
- and
- alarm logic in communication with the monitor, the alarm logic being operable to determine whether there is a threshold crossing during the observance window and set a flag state indicating a user device is out of conformance in response to determining the threshold crossing.
