An optical communication system includes logic to communicate using optical channels set outside a fiber zero dispersion zone, and having channel spacing that decreases with increasing distance from the fiber zero dispersion zone.

An optical communication system comprising:
- logic to communicate using optical channels set outside a fiber zero dispersion zone, and having channel spacing that decreases with increasing distance from the fiber zero dispersion zone.
An optical transmitter comprising:
- multiple lasers adapted to output light at a plurality of optical wavelengths each set outside a fiber zero dispersion zone, the spacing between the wavelengths output by the lasers decreasing with distance from the fiber zero dispersion zone.
