Abstract
The present invention provides a method for manufacture of a grid structure for use in lead acid batteries using a substrate having low density and low melting point, the method comprising coating the substrate material with a first metal layer and a subsequent metal layer of lead/lead alloy and electrodepositing an electroconductive polymer to form a protective layer thereon.
Claims34
An electrochemical method for manufacture of a corrosion resistant grid structure for use in a lead-acid battery, the method comprising:
- (a) coating a substrate material with a first metal layer and a subsequent metal layer of lead/lead alloy;
- (b) electrodepositing an organic metal on the layer obtained at the end of step (a) using an electrolyte to form a protective layer thereon and to obtain the desired grid structure.
A corrosion resistant grid structure for use in a lead-acid battery, the grid structure comprising:
- (a) a substrate material coated with a first metal layer,
- (b) a second metal layer of lead/lead alloy layer deposited on the first metal layer, and
- (c) an organic metal layer electrodeposited on the lead/lead alloy layer.
A battery comprising:
- (a) a positive plate;
- and
- (b) a negative plate containing a grid structure, the grid structure comprising:
- (i) a substrate;
- (ii) a first metal layer deposited on the substrate;
- (iii) a second metal layer comprising a lead/lead alloy layer deposited on the first metal layer;
- and
- (iv) an electrically conductive and corrosion-resistant organic metal layer deposited on the lead/lead alloy layer.
