Abstract
An entire radio transceiver can be completely integrated into one IC chip. In order to integrate the IF filters on the chip, a heterodyne architecture with a low IF is used. A single, directly modulated VCO is used for both up-conversion during transmission, and down-conversion during reception. Bond-wires are used as resonators in the oscillator tank for the VCO. A TDD scheme is used in the air interface to eliminate cross-talk or leakage. A Gaussian-shaped binary FSK modulation scheme is used to provide a number of other implementation advantages.
Claims33
A radio for receiving and transmitting high frequency signals, the radio comprising:
- a down-conversion section arranged to down-convert a received first high frequency signal;
- an up-conversion section arranged to up-convert an information signal, to be transmitted, to a second high frequency signal;
- a variable voltage controlled oscillator connected to the up-conversion section and the down-conversion section for down-converting the first high frequency signal during a receive cycle and up-converting the information signal during a transmit cycle in a time division duplex mode;
- and
- wherein the up-conversion section, the down-conversion section, and the variable controlled oscillator are integrated on a single IC chip, and the variable controlled oscillator is modulated by the information signal during the transmit cycle.
A method of operating a radio transceiver, the method comprising:
- modulating the radio transceiver in a time division duplex mode;
- down-converting a received radio frequency signal during a receive cycle by means of a variable controlled oscillator;
- up-converting a first information signal to a high frequency signal by means of the variable controlled oscillator;
- wherein the variable controlled oscillator is integrated into a single IC chip;
- and
- wherein the step of up-converting comprises up-converting the first information signal to the high frequency signal during a transmit cycle by modulating the variable controlled oscillator by means of the first information signal.
