Unified formats for resources and repositories for managing localization

A unified resource repository encoded in at least one computer readable storage medium, the unified resource repository comprising:

• a plurality of representations that correspond respectively to a plurality of resources, wherein the resources represent textual information that is displayable in at least one user interface presented by at least one software application;
• wherein the representations of the resources include data tags that correspond respectively to the resources, that contain respective name attributes for identifying the resources, wherein at least one of the data tags contains:
• a value tag for providing a value of a resource that corresponds to the at least one data tag,
• a meta tag that contains a further name attribute, wherein the meta tag provides a recursive nesting mechanism for associating the name attribute with at least the further name attribute.

At least one computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method comprising

• receiving a representation of a non-localized resource, wherein the non-localized resource represents textual information that is displayable in at least one user interface presented by at least one software application;
• storing the representation of the non-localized resource in a unified resource repository, wherein the unified resource repository is for containing a plurality of respective representations of a plurality of resources, including at least the non-localized resource, and wherein the representations of the resources include respective data tags that are associated with:
• at least one name attribute for identifying the resources,
• at least one value tag for providing values of the resources,
• at least one meta tag for providing a recursive nesting mechanism that associates the name attribute and the value tag with at least a further name attribute and at least a further value tag, wherein the further name attribute identifies at least one instance of localization instructions for the resources, and wherein the further value tag specifies the localization instructions for the resources,
• wherein the representation of the non-localized resource includes instances of the further name attribute and the further value tag that specify localization instructions for the non-localized resource,
• sending the non-localized resource for localization in accordance with the localization instructions specified for the non-localized resource.
