Abstract
Compositions of cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) are disclosed that are generally in the form of an elastic, hydrophilic, water-insoluble viscous cohesive mass of material that has many important medical uses including uses as a filler for implants. The present invention also involves a process for producing such compositions.
Claims24
A method of producing a biocompatible, flexible, cohesive aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) gel material comprising:
- (a) thoroughly mixing a volume of water with an amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and a minor amount of base compound;
- (b) reacting the mixture at ambient temperature and pressure until a cohesive water-insoluble gel mass is formed;
- and
- (c) adding an amount of water to the reacted gel mass of (b) to maximize and stabilize the gel mass volume.
An implant material comprising a biocompatible water-insoluble cohesive aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) gel mass having a water-stabilized volume.
