Abstract
Session independent end to end route control is provided by coordination between a pair of route control devices. Each device determines whether received traffic qualifies for end to end route control and whether the device at the other end supports end to end route control. If so, then the route control devices determine a routing mode, such as tunneling or address translation, and routing parameters. The performance of the selected path is monitored and is changed if the performance becomes unacceptable. Path performance can be measured using one-way measurement techniques that use a common inbound path or a control channel.

A method for end to end route control between a source and a destination, comprising:
- determining a routing mode and routing parameters based on routing configuration information exchanged between a source route control device and a destination route control device;
- routing outbound traffic using the routing mode through a plurality of paths, wherein each path is associated with a source provider and a destination provider and is distinct from the other paths, and wherein an outbound packet is routed through each of the paths;
- receiving inbound traffic through the paths, wherein the inbound traffic includes a first arriving inbound packet and at least one subsequent arriving inbound packet, wherein content of the first arriving inbound packet and the subsequent arriving inbound packet is the same;
- forwarding the first arriving inbound packet to the source;
- and
- discarding the subsequent arriving inbound packet.
A method for determining one-way path performance in a network that includes a source route control device and a destination route control device, wherein the source route control device is connected to at least two source network service providers and the destination route control device is connected to at least one destination network service provider, so that there are a plurality of outbound paths from the source route control device to the destination route control device, comprising:
- determining an inbound path from the destination route control device to the source route control device, wherein the inbound path is associated with a selected one of the source network service providers and a selected one of the destination network service providers;
- probing each of the outbound paths by traversing each of the outbound paths from the source route control device to the destination route control device and traversing the inbound path, so that the inbound path is traversed for all outbound paths;
- and
- for each of the outbound paths, probing to determine performance associated with the outbound path by traversing the outbound path from the source route control device to the destination route control device and traversing the inbound path, so that the inbound path is traversed for all outbound paths.
A method for determining one-way path performance in a network that includes a source route control device and a destination route control device, wherein the source route control device is connected to at least two source network service providers and the destination route control device is connected to at least one destination network service provider, so that there are a plurality of outbound paths from the source route control device to the destination route control device, and wherein the source route control device and the destination route control device are time synchronized, comprising:
- for each of the outbound paths:
- probing the outbound path by traversing the outbound path from the source route control device to the destination route control device;
- receiving performance information from the destination route control device via a control channel.
