Abstract
A content transmission selection system is disclosed. The content transmission selection system receives requests from viewers for specific video content items. Using characteristics of the designated content item, the content transmission selection system determines whether to transmit the content item over a broadcast network or a broadband network.
Claims15
A method for providing video content, the method comprising:
- receiving a first transmission request from a viewer location at a transmission network selector, wherein a first data coupling is available between the viewer location and the transmission network selector through a broadcast network, wherein a second data coupling is available between the viewer location and the transmission network selector through a broadband network, wherein the broadcast and broadband networks are different, and wherein the first transmission request includes a request for first video content;
- selecting the first data coupling through the broadcast network for transmission of the first video content to the viewer location;
- transmitting a first notification to the viewer location, wherein the first notification includes an identification of the first data coupling for transmission of the first video content;
- after transmitting the first notification, transmitting the first video content from the transmission network selector to the viewer location through the broadcast network;
- receiving a second transmission request from the viewer location at the transmission network selector, wherein the second transmission request includes a request for second video content;
- selecting the second data coupling through the broadband network for transmission of the second video content to the viewer location;
- transmitting a second notification to the viewer location, wherein the second notification includes an identification of the second data coupling for transmission of the second video content;
- and
- after transmitting the second notification, transmitting the second video content from the transmission network selector to the viewer location through the broadband network.
