Abstract
An article comprising a drive cable suitable for high-speed operation in an anatomy having small-radii bends is disclosed. The drive cables disclosed herein include one or more physical adaptations that enable them to be “tuned” to avoid large amplitude vibrations during operation.
Claims37
An article comprising a rotary drive cable, wherein the drive cable comprises:
- (a) a first coil;
- and
- (b) at least a first physical adaptation that affects a dynamic response of the drive cable, wherein the first physical adaptation is selected as a function of a forcing frequency to prevent harmonic resonance in the drive cable.
A drive cable for driving an impeller of a catheter blood pump, wherein the drive cable comprises a plurality of discrete segments that are coupled end-to-end, and wherein a position of each of the discrete segments along the drive cable is related to the anatomy in which the drive cable is to be used, and further wherein the discrete segments, as coupled, are suitable for driving the impeller at a rate of at least 1000 rpm.
(canceled)
An article comprising a rotary drive cable, wherein the drive cable comprises a plurality of segments in a linear arrangement, wherein:
- (a) at least some of the segments differ from some other of the segments as to their relative capacity for transmitting torque along a curved path;
- (b) a position of the segments in the linear arrangement thereof is selected to correspond to a geometry of a system in which the drive cable is used, wherein segments that possess a relatively greater ability to transmit torque along a curved path are positioned to coincide with relatively more curved regions of the system;
- and

A percutaneous blood pump comprising:
- a motor;
- a rotary drive cable, wherein a first end of the drive cable is operatively coupled to the motor, and wherein the drive cable comprises a plurality of discrete, linearly-arranged segments, and further wherein at least two of the segments are coils and at least two other of the segments are rods;
- and
- an impeller, wherein a second end of the drive cable is operatively coupled to the impeller.
A percutaneous blood pump comprising:
- a motor;
- a rotary drive cable, wherein a first end of the drive cable is operatively coupled to the motor, and wherein the drive cable comprises a plurality of discrete, linearly-arranged segments, and wherein at least some of the segments differ from some other of the segments as to their relative capacity for transmitting torque along a curved path, and wherein a position of the segments in the linear arrangement thereof is selected to correspond to a geometry of a system in which the drive cable is used, wherein segments that possess a relatively greater ability to transmit torque along a curved path are positioned to coincide with relatively more curved regions of the system;
- and
- an impeller, wherein a second end of the drive cable is operatively coupled to the drive the impeller in rotary motion.
