Abstract
Jet black thermoplastic compositions are obtained when a carbon black having particular properties is blended with a particular poly(arylene ether) or polycarbonate resin system. Failure to observe similar color properties with other resin systems or other carbon black types indicates a synergy between the carbon black type and the two resin types. Methods of preparing the compositions and articles comprising the compositions are described.
Claims38
A black-colored thermoplastic composition, comprising:
- about 20 to about 80 parts by weight of a poly(arylene ether);
- about 20 to about 80 parts by weight of a styrenic polymer;
- and
- about 0.1 to about 2 parts by weight of a carbon black having
- a heating loss of at least 3 weight percent measured according to ASTM D1509, and
- a volatiles content of at least 5 weight percent measured according to DIN 53552;
- wherein all parts by weight are based on 100 parts by weight total of the poly(arylene ether) and the styrenic polymer;
- and
- wherein the black-colored thermoplastic composition exhibits a CIE lightness value, L*, less than or equal to 5 measured according to ASTM E308 using an angle of 45° with specular light excluded.
A black-colored thermoplastic composition, comprising:
- about 30 to about 50 parts by weight of a poly(arylene ether);
- about 15 to about 35 parts by weight of a rubber-modified polystyrene;
- about 25 to about 45 parts by weight of a homopolystyrene;
- and
- about 0.3 to about 1.5 parts by weight of a carbon black having
- a heating loss of 3 to about 4 weight percent measured according to ASTM D1509,
- a volatiles content of 9 to about 30 weight percent measured according to DIN 53552, and
- a pH of about 2 to about 4 measured according to ASTM D1512;
- wherein all parts by weight are based on 100 parts by weight total of the poly(arylene ether), the rubber-modified polystyrene, and the homopolystyrene;
- and
- wherein the black-colored thermoplastic composition exhibits
- a CIE lightness value, L*, of 2 to 4 measured at 45° with specular light excluded according to ASTM E308, and
- a CIE b* value of −1.5 to 0 measured according to ASTM E308.
A black-colored thermoplastic composition, consisting of:
- about 30 to about 50 parts by weight of a poly(arylene ether);
- about 15 to about 35 parts by weight of a rubber-modified polystyrene;
- about 25 to about 45 parts by weight of a homopolystyrene;
