Abstract
Compositions containing aequorin and methods for their use in preventing and/or alleviating symptoms and disorders related to calcium imbalance are provided by the present invention.

A composition for preventing or alleviating a symptom or disorder associated with calcium imbalance comprising:
- (a) an effective amount of aequorin;
- and
- (b) an acceptable carrier.
A method for preventing or alleviating a symptom or disorder associated with calcium imbalance comprising administering to a subject in need of such treatment an effective amount of aequorin.
A method for conferring protection against ischemic insult in a subject, comprising administering to a subject in need of such treatment an effective amount of aequorin.
