Processes for improving the properties of byproducts of dry milling are described. In one process, fractionated plant seed tissue is soaked such that starch is loosened and washed away in the soaking liquid. A byproduct results that has decreased starch content, and when the byproduct includes germ tissue, has increased oil content. In a process, short soak times and lower temperatures are used as compared to traditional wet milling processes, and results in a byproduct that has both increased protein dispersibility index and increased oil content. Lower pH may further increase oil and protein dispersiblity index levels. When a higher pH is used, protein dispersiblity increases, regardless of the temperature of the soaking liquid.
A method of decreasing starch content of dry milled fractionated tissue of plant seed, the method comprising separating plant tissue of said seed into fractionated tissue by dry milling fractionation, soaking said fractionated tissue in a liquid until starch bonds are loosened and said loosen starch is moved into said liquid, such that said fractionated tissue has a starch content of less than 14% on a dry matter basis.
A byproduct of dry milling of plant seed comprising fractionated seed tissue with reduced starch content, said byproduct having a starch content of less than about 14% starch on a dry matter basis.
A method of increasing protein dispersibility index and oil content of dry milled fractionated germ tissue of a plant seed, the method comprising fractionating plant seed tissue in a dry milling fractionation process to produce tissue comprising germ tissue and tissue comprising endosperm tissue, separating said tissue comprising germ tissue from said tissue comprising endosperm tissue, soaking said tissue comprising germ tissue in a liquid for less than about 15 hours at a temperature of less than 140° F. such that said tissue comprising germ tissue has a protein density index of at least about 30 and an oil content of at least about 30% on a dry matter basis.
A method of increasing protein dispersibility index of dry milled germ tissue of a plant seed, the method comprising fractionating plant tissue of said seed in a dry milling fractionation process to produce tissue comprising germ tissue and tissue comprising endosperm tissue, separating said tissue comprising endosperm tissue from said tissue comprising embryo tissue, soaking said tissue comprising germ tissue in a liquid having a pH of at least about 9 such that said tissue comprising germ tissue has a protein density index on a dry matter basis that is higher after soaking then before soaking.
A byproduct of dry milling of a plant seed having increased protein dispersibility index and oil content, said byproduct comprising germ tissue of said seed having a protein dispersibility index of at least about 30 and an oil content of at least about 30% on a dry matter basis.
