Abstract
Resettable circuit breakers having an independent trip mechanism and a reset lockout are provided. The trip mechanism operates independently of the fault protection operations, and the reset lockout prevents the resetting of the circuit breaker if the fault protection is non-operational or if an open neutral condition exists.
Claims20
A circuit interrupting device comprising:
- at least one input conductor adapted to connect at least one output conductor to a power source;
- at least one contact arm movable between a closed position to provide electrical continuity between the at least one input conductor and the at least one output conductor, an open position to break electrical continuity between the at least one input conductor and the at least one output conductor, and a stressed position to momentarily electrically engage the at least one input conductor;
- at least one reset arm having a latch disposed thereon and configured to move between a reset position wherein the latch maintains the at least one contact arm in the closed position and a tripped position wherein the at least one contact arm is disengaged by the latch and the at least one contact arm is in the open position, wherein the at least one reset arm is configured to selectively cause the latch to move the at least one contact arm to the stressed position when the at least one reset arm is depressed while in the tripped position;
- and
- a circuit interrupter configured to move the at least one reset arm from the reset position to the tripped position upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition and from the tripped position to the reset position upon movement of the at least one contact arm to the stressed position if the predetermined condition is resolved.
A method of detecting a predetermined condition of a circuit interrupting device having at least one input conductor electrically connected to a power source and at least one output conductor adapted to electrically connect to the at least one input conductor to provide electrical continuity between the power source and at least one of a user accessible receptacle and at least one load, comprising the steps of:
- providing a reset actuator configured to move between a reset position to provide electrical continuity between the at least one input conductor and the at least one output conductor such that the output conductor provides electrical continuity between the power source and at least one of the user accessible receptacle and the at least one load and a tripped position to break electrical continuity between the at least one input conductor and the at least one output conductor thereby breaking electrical continuity between the power source and the at least one load if the predetermined condition remains unresolved;
- providing a circuit interrupter configured to electrically connect to the at least one output conductor to detect the occurrence of the predetermined condition and momentarily to the at least one input conductor to provide electrical continuity between the power source and the circuit interrupter to provide a simulated condition if the predetermined condition is resolved, the reset actuator configured to move from the reset position to the tripped position upon the occurrence of the predetermined condition and from the tripped position to the reset position upon the occurrence of the simulated condition;
- and
- actuating the reset actuator to electrically connect the circuit interrupter to the at least one input conductor to provide the simulated condition, wherein the reset actuator remains in one of the reset position and the tripped position if the predetermined condition remains unresolved and moves from the tripped position to the reset position if the predetermined condition is resolved.
