Abstract
A cable modem includes a cable transceiver that provides bidirectional broadband access to a wide area network in accordance with a first wired communication protocol. An RF transceiver provides bidirectional communication with a remote device over a short range radio frequency link. A memory module stores a secure access application. A processing module executes the secure access application, the secure access application reading identification data from the remote device via the short range radio frequency link that identifies a user.
Claims27
A cable modem comprising:
- a cable transceiver, coupled to a cable network, that provides bidirectional broadband access to a wide area network in accordance with a first wired communication protocol;
- a radio frequency (RF) transceiver, that provides bidirectional communication with a remote device over a short range radio frequency link at a selected carrier frequency;
- a programmable antenna, coupled to the RF transceiver, that is dynamically tuned to the selected carrier frequency to transmit and receive an RF signal over the short range radio frequency link.
- a memory module that stores a secure access application;
- and
- a processing module, coupled to the cable transceiver, the RF transceiver and the memory module, that executes the secure access application, the secure access application reading identification data from the remote device via the short range radio frequency link that identifies a user.
