Removable optical sight mount adapted for use with M14, M1A and similar rifles and method for removably attaching an optical sight to a rifle

A removable mount adapted for use with rifle, comprising:

• a horizontal longitudinal rectangular base carrying an upper support segment, said upper support segment carrying at least one centrally aligned accessory,
• a vertical side wall attached to said base, said vertical side wall projecting downwardly from said base and having an interior surface opposing an exterior surface;
• said interior surface of said vertical side wall having an inwardly projecting longitudinal tenon dimensioned to fit within a longitudinal groove defined in a rifle's receiver;
• said vertical side wall having an aperture running there thru, said aperture having an interior surface adapted to receive an annular eccentric camming knob;
• said camming knob formed to receive a first threaded fastener there thru, said fastener adapted to mate with a manufacturer-provided threaded bore located in the rifle's receiver;
• said camming knob having an inwardly projecting camming surface adapted to exert force against said interior surface of said side wall aperture;
• said distal end of said base has a first threaded bore defined therethrough, said bore being adapted to allow a second threaded fastener to contact and exert pressure on the crown of the receiver;
• said distal end of said base has a second threaded bore hole defined therethrough to intersect with said first bore, and adapted to allow a third threaded fastener to contact and exert locking or setting pressure on said second threaded fastener;
• a guide block dimensioned to be transversely mounted on a rifle's receiver within a receiver notch;
• and
• said guide block being affixed to said proximal end of said base by at least one block retaining fastener.

A rifle comprising:

• a receiver having a crown and left and right sides;
• said receiver comprising a manufacturer-provided threaded connection and a longitudinal groove running lengthwise along a side of said rifle, said manufacturer-provided threaded connection being located above said longitudinal groove;
• said receiver having a notch on said receiver's crown;
• a mount having a one-piece mount base with an upper support segment, said mount base having a distal end and a proximal end;
• said upper support segment having a concave upper surface,
• said mount base including a substantially vertical side wall projecting downwardly from said upper support segment and having an interior surface opposing an exterior surface;
• said interior surface of said vertical side wall having an inwardly projecting longitudinal tenon dimensioned to fit within the longitudinal groove in said rifle's receiver;
• said vertical side wall adapted to receive a first threaded fastener therethrough, said first threaded fastener adapted to mate with the manufacturer-provided threaded connection located on said receiver;
• a guide block dimensioned to be mounted within the receiver's notch;
• and
• said guide block being attached to said proximal end of said base by at least one block retaining fastener.

A method for attaching a removable mount to an M-14 or M-1A rifle, said method comprising:

• providing an M-14 or M-1A rifle with a receiver, said receiver comprising a crown and two sides;
• said receiver including a longitudinal groove and a manufacturer-provided threaded bore above said groove and a proximal transverse notch;
• providing a guide block adapted to fit in the receiver's transverse notch;
• providing a mount with a mount base defining a longitudinal tenon, a camming knob, at least one guide block retaining screw, and first and second threaded connections through said mount;
• inserting said guide block inside the inner transverse area the receiver's transverse notch;
• placing the mount over said receiver crown;
• threading a first screw through the first threaded connection of said mount;
• finger tightening said first screw;
• threading said guide block retaining screw through said mount base and into said guide block, thereby affixing said base to said guide block;
• slightly tightening said guide block retaining screws;
• manipulating said cam knob until said tenon mates with said receiver groove;
• threading a second screw through said second threaded connection until said second screw applies pressure against said receiver crown;
• and
• tightening said first and second screws, and said guide block retaining screws until said mount is firmly affixed to said rifle receiver.
