Method and system for state estimation in power systems

A method of state estimation, comprising:

• (a) acquiring a plurality of phasor measurements;
• (b) calculating complex power having a real part and an imaginary part, using said phasor measurements;
• (c) using said real part of said complex power as a calculated mega-watt and said imaginary part of said complex power as a calculated mega volt-ampere;
• and
• (d) using said mega-watt and mega volt-ampere calculations in a state estimation algorithm.

A system for providing state estimation, comprising:

• a computer;
• and
• a plurality of phasor measurement units, said phasor measurement units located at a plurality of power substations;
• wherein said phasor measurement units provide positive sequence voltage and current phasor measurements to said computer, and said computer calculates complex power having a real component and an imaginary component, using said positive sequence voltage and current phasor measurements;
• using said real component of said complex power as a calculated mega-watt and said imaginary component of said complex power as a calculated mega volt-ampere;
• and using said calculated mega-watt and calculated mega volt-ampere calculations in a state estimation algorithm.
