Method of splitting a multi-dimensional cube between a multi-dimensional and a relational database

A method comprising:

• selecting a multi-dimensional portion, blocked portion and relational portion of at least one hierarchy for at least one dimension;
• thereafter;
• transferring data between a relational database and a multidimensional database for the multi-dimensional portion;
• and
• thereafter, adjusting the size of the blocked and relational portions.

A method comprising:

• selecting a multi-dimensional portion, and relational portion of at least one hierarchy for at least one dimension;
• producing metadata, the metadata indicating a partition between multidimensional and relational portions and for each member of the lowest level of the multi-dimensional portion of the hierarchy the metadata indicating whether any child nodes exist below the partition;
• and
• obtaining data from the multidimensional portion from a multidimensional database and obtaining data from the relational portion by constructing queries to a relational database, the queries constructed using the metadata.
