Abstract
Provided herein are methods of reconstructing an image from projection data provided by a tomography scanner that is based on geometric optics comprising scanning an object in a cone-beam imaging geometry following a non-standard spiral path or a general piecewise smooth scanning path wherein projection data is generated and reconstructing an image according to a closed-form formula that is either in the filtered backprojection (FBP) or backprojection filtration (or backprojected filtration, BPF) formats. Also provided herein are associated systems and apparatuses for tomographic imaging.

A method of reconstructing an image from projection data provided by a tomography scanner that is based on geometric optics comprising:
- scanning an object in a cone-beam imaging geometry following a general piecewise smooth scanning path wherein projection data is generated;
- and
- reconstructing an image according to a closed-form formula.
A system of reconstructing an image from projection data provided by a tomography scanner that is based on geometric optics comprising:
- a tomography scanner for scanning an object in a cone-beam imaging geometry following a general piecewise smooth scanning path, wherein projection data is generated;
- a processor programmed for performing the step of:
- reconstructing an image according to a closed-form non-iterative formula that is exact.
A computer readable medium having computer executable instructions for reconstructing an image from projection data provided by a tomography scanner that is based on geometric optics comprising:
- reconstructing an image according to a closed-form formula that is exact from projection data wherein the data is acquired as the result of a scan following a general piecewise smooth scanning path.
An imaging apparatus comprising:
- a vacuum chamber having an exterior surface, an underlying interior surface, and defining an enclosed space, wherein at least a portion of the exterior surface defines a subject cavity;
- a charged particle beam generator having a distal end positioned within the enclosed space of the vacuum chamber;
- a focusing mechanism adapted to selectively focus charged particles generated by the charged particle beam generator;
- a target adapted to generate X-rays upon receipt of charged particles from the charged particle beam generator, wherein the target is disposed within the enclosed space of the vacuum chamber about at least a portion of the interior surface of the vacuum chamber that underlies the subject cavity, and wherein the focusing mechanism is positioned intermediate the charged particle beam generator and the target such that the charged particles generated by the charged particle beam generator can be selectively focused on selective portions of the target;
- and
- a detector surrounding the target wherein the detector is positioned to receive X-rays generated by the target.
