Method and apparatus for radiation detection

An imaging system for imaging a living organism, said living organism treated with a radionuclide emitting positrons, a portion of said emitted positrons creating photons within said living organism, said system comprising:

• a first and a second detection systems, said living organism placed between said first and second detection systems, wherein said first and second detection systems are diametrically opposed, wherein said first and second detection systems are comprised of a plurality of position sensitive detectors, and wherein a portion of said photons are detected within said detection systems;
• a multi-channel readout system coupled to said plurality of position sensitive detectors;
• a display system coupled to multi-channel readout systems, said display system including a processor, said processor determining directions of said portion of said photons;
• and
• said display system displaying an image of said living organism.

An imaging system for imaging an object using a photon source, said system comprising:

• a detector aperture, said aperture limiting said detector to a predetermined field-of-view;
• a detection system comprised of a plurality of position sensitive detectors, wherein a portion of said photons pass through said aperture into said detection system and detected with position information;
• a multi-channel readout system coupled to said plurality of position sensitive detectors;
• a processor coupled to said multi-channel readout system;
• and
• an output device coupled to said multi-channel readout system, said output device outputting information corresponding to said portion of gamma rays, wherein a portion of the information is displayed as an image of the said object.
