Abstract
A method for controlling an engine having both an electronically controlled inlet device, such as an electronic throttle unite, and an electronically controlled outlet device, such as a variable cam timing system is disclosed. The method of the present invention achieves cylinder air charge control that is faster than possible by using an inlet device alone. In other words, the method of the present invention controls cylinder air charge faster than manifold dynamics by coordination of the inlet and outlet device. This improved control is used to improve various engine control functions.

A method for controlling an engine having at least one cylinder, the engine also having an intake manifold and an electronically controlled intake valve for controlling flow from the intake manifold into the cylinder, the intake manifold coupled to a turbocharger for compressing the flow into the intake manifold, comprising:
- generating an operator command requesting an increase in output;
- and
- increasing flow into the cylinder by adjusting the electronically controlled intake valve in response to said operator command to reduce a delay that would otherwise be experienced due a delay in response of the turbocharger.
A method for controlling an engine having at least one cylinder, the engine also having an intake manifold and an electronically controlled intake valve for controlling flow from the intake manifold into the cylinder, the intake manifold coupled to a turbocharger for compressing the flow into the intake manifold, comprising:
- generating an operator command requesting a rapid increase in torque;
- and
- when operating at one of low engine speed and low vehicle speed, increasing flow into the cylinder by adjusting the electronically controlled intake valve in response to said operator command to reduce a delay that would otherwise be experienced due to a delay in pressure buildup of the turbocharger.
A system for an engine having at least one cylinder, comprising:
- an intake manifold;
- an electronically controlled intake valve for controlling flow from the intake manifold into the cylinder;
- a turbocharger coupled to the intake manifold for compressing the flow into the intake manifold;
- and
- a controller configured to generate an operator command requesting a rapid increase in torque, and when operating at one of low engine speed and low vehicle speed and before manifold pressure buildup occurs, increasing flow into the cylinder by adjusting said electronically controlled intake valve in response to said operator command to reduce a delay that would otherwise be experienced due to turbo-lag.
