Abstract
Nucleic acids containing unmethylated CpG dinucleotides and therapeutic utilities based on their ability to stimulate an immune response and to redirect a Th2 response to a Th1 response in a subject are disclosed. Methods for treating atopic diseases, including atopic dermatitis, are disclosed.

1-18. (canceled)
An immunostimulatory oligonucleotide of 8-100 nucleotides in length, including a sequence of the following formula:
- 5′ X1X2CGX2X4 3′
- wherein C is unmethylated, wherein X1, X2, X3, and X4 are nucleotides, and wherein the immunostimulatory oligonucleotide includes a phosphate backbone modification, wherein the immunostimulatory oligonucleotide promotes a Th1 type response and a cytotoxic lymphocyte response in a subject when administered in conjunction with an antigen.
A method for promoting a Th1 immune response and a cytotoxic lymphocyte response in a subject comprising administering to a subject an antigen and an immunostimulatory oligonucleotide of 8-100 nucleotides in length having a sequence of the following formula:
- 5′ X1X2CGX3X4 3′
- wherein C is unmethylated, wherein X1, X2, X3, and X4 are nucleotides, whereby the immunostimulatory oligonucleotide promotes a Th1 immune response and a cytotoxic lymphocyte response in the subject.
An immunostimulatory oligonucleotide of 8-100 nucleotides in length, including a sequence of the following formula:
- 5′ X1X2CGX3X4 3′
- wherein C is unmethylated, wherein X1, X2, X3, and X4 are nucleotides, and wherein the immunostimulatory oligonucleotide includes a phosphate backbone modification.
